How a Global Enterprise Unified Secure Digital Identity for Its Entire Workforce and Enabled Seamless Workplace Access

Client Name : Fintech

Industry : Financial Services (with specialized focus on risk, compliance, and financial crime detection)

Region: US East (N. Virginia)

Duration: 1 Weeks

Customer Overview

A leading finance company operating across multiple regions required a secure and scalable identity management solution. The organization had a distributed IT environment with legacy Active Directory (AD) systems and sought to modernize its identity infrastructure using AWS.

Business Challenge

The company faced challenges with fragmented identity systems, limited scalability, and manual user provisioning processes. Their existing AD infrastructure was hosted on-premises, lacked redundancy, and was difficult to manage across multiple locations. They needed a centralized, cloud-based solution that could integrate with existing workloads and support future growth.

Objective

The primary objective was to migrate the legacy Active Directory to AWS, enabling centralized identity management, improved security, and operational efficiency. The solution needed to support hybrid connectivity, seamless integration with Microsoft workloads, and high availability.

Solution by Futran Solutions

The migration was executed using AWS Directory Service for Microsoft Active Directory (AWS Managed Microsoft AD). The finance company deployed domain controllers across multiple Availability Zones for fault tolerance. AWS VPN and Direct Connect were used to establish secure connectivity between on-premises infrastructure and AWS. Group policies, user accounts, and organizational units were replicated and validated post-migration.

Architecture Overview

c1

The architecture featured AWS Managed Microsoft AD deployed within a dedicated VPC, with subnets spanning multiple Availability Zones (AZs) to ensure high availability and fault tolerance. EC2 instances running Windows Server were joined to the domain to support workload integration.

Secure hybrid connectivity was established using AWS VPN and AWS Direct Connect, enabling encrypted communication between the on-premises infrastructure and AWS. IAM roles and security groups were configured to enforce granular access control. Additional AWS services such as Amazon CloudWatch, AWS CloudTrail, Amazon Inspector, AWS WAF, and AWS KMS were integrated to enhance monitoring, auditing, threat detection, and data protection.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) via Duo Security was used to strengthen user access security, and NAT Gateways supported outbound internet access for private subnets hosting domain controllers.

Security

The solution enforced strong identity and access controls using IAM roles, security groups, and AWS Managed Microsoft AD. Secure connectivity was established via AWS VPN and Direct Connect, ensuring encrypted communication between on-premises and cloud environments. Centralized identity management reduced the risk of misconfigurations and unauthorized access.

High Availability

Domain controllers were deployed across multiple Availability Zones, ensuring fault tolerance and minimizing downtime. The architecture was designed to automatically recover from failures, maintaining consistent access to identity services even during infrastructure disruptions.

Reliability

The architecture was designed for fault tolerance and service continuity. Domain controllers were deployed across multiple Availability Zones (AZs), ensuring that identity services remained available even in the event of an AZ-level failure. Health checks and failover mechanisms were implemented to automatically recover from disruptions, maintaining consistent access to authentication and directory services.

Operational Excellence

The use of AWS Managed Microsoft AD eliminated the need for manual patching and maintenance of domain controllers, allowing the IT team to focus on strategic initiatives. Automated provisioning of users and group policies streamlined operations, while monitoring and auditing through Amazon CloudWatch and AWS CloudTrail provided visibility into system health and user activity. This enabled proactive issue resolution and compliance tracking.

Results Achieved

  • Centralized Identity: Legacy AD consolidated into AWS Managed Microsoft AD, simplifying management.
  • Uptime: Achieved 99.9% availability for identity services.
  • Efficiency: Reduced IT admin effort by ~35% and cut user provisioning time by ~70%.
  • Security: MFA adoption and centralized policies reduced unauthorized access risks by ~50%.
  • Scalability: Architecture scaled seamlessly to support future workloads.

Lessons Learned / Best Practices

Key lessons included the importance of planning AD schema replication, validating group policies post-migration, and ensuring secure hybrid connectivity. Using AWS Managed Microsoft AD simplified operations and provided scalability without the need to manage domain controllers manually.
