GARP has recently taken a momentous decision to embrace AWS cloud as its future infrastructure platform, initiating the migration process for existing applications. This pivotal step is essential in enabling GARP to embark on a transformative journey aimed at reducing operational costs.
However, the migration program has encountered several challenges in its pursuit of primary objectives, including comprehending application dependencies, navigating Networking Infrastructure complexities, meticulous planning, precise timing, and managing costs effectively.
To tackle these obstacles head-on and fulfill the larger aspiration of cloud migration, GARP sought the expertise of Futran Solutions – an esteemed Advanced AWS Consulting Services Partner. Futran Solutions was entrusted with the task of revamping the disaster recovery (DR) solution, a crucial element of the migration endeavor. The focus was on creating a fully functional, scalable, and seamlessly operable Infrastructure Solution leveraging the capabilities of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Considering GARP’s position as a Global Association of Risk Professionals solutions and services delivery organization, it was imperative to develop a disaster recovery solution capable of swiftly restoring extensive and intricate systems encompassing hundreds of servers, ensuring a swift turnaround time during potential disruptions.
GARP faced significant challenges with its on-premises infrastructure, as it lacked business resilience, cost-effectiveness, and scalability, making it difficult to meet service-level agreements (SLAs) for clients. These SLAs specified stringent requirements for Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO). Additionally, GARP grappled with a complex architecture comprising legacy systems, monolithic structures, and intricate interdependencies among various services.
Given GARP’s strict regulatory demands regarding data security and compliance, ensuring a secure and compliant migration became a top priority.
In response, Futran took charge and implemented a robust cloud-based infrastructure solution for GARP, leveraging the power of AWS. This strategic move effectively minimized downtime and data loss, offering swift and reliable recovery for both on-premises and cloud-based applications. By utilizing cost-effective storage, minimal compute resources, and point-in-time recovery capabilities, GARP’s migration to the AWS cloud was streamlined and efficient.
With the adoption of AWS, GARP not only surpassed its SLAs’ recovery time and recovery point objectives but also achieved enhanced scalability in its infrastructure, all while optimizing costs effectively. The successful implementation empowered GARP to provide improved services to its clients, ensuring seamless continuity and data integrity while embracing the numerous advantages offered by AWS cloud solutions.
Improve infrastructure reliability, scalability, and fault tolerance.
Implement effective performance monitoring.
Provide secure browser-accessible storage for sensitive case studies.
Replace costly and unreliable on-premises backups.
Simplify changes to legacy codes and updates.
Efficiently handle infrastructure queries with a dedicated resource.
Eliminate manual FTP server setup and maintenance.
Enable global customer service using AWS’s availability.
Enhance security measures for highly confidential data.
Establish data backups, restricted access, and high availability.
Implement continuous monitoring and alerts for system health.
Ensure a successful migration to AWS with improved performance and security for GARP.
AWS’ global infrastructure allowed GARP to serve customers in different locations efficiently, providing reliable and scalable services through various compute services like EC2 and Lambda.
Instead of using outdated Windows servers, Futran proposed using the most recent versions (2016 and 2019) with longer End-of-Support (EOS) and enhanced security.
Futran implemented robust security measures, including IAM, Security Groups (SG), CloudTrail, and VPC, to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of GARP’s highly sensitive data.
The solution provided secure data storage with backups, utilizing services like S3, FSx, KMS, and RDS to ensure high availability and restricted access to critical data.
The use of FSx on Windows servers proved to be extremely beneficial, simplifying installation and supporting third-party FTPs, while ensuring fault tolerance during Availability Zone (AZ) failures.
By using Windows-based EC2 servers, developers were able to easily connect to RDS using GUI database tools, reducing query writing time and simplifying various tasks.
The Windows-based workspace enabled GARP to leverage their existing software licenses without additional purchases, optimizing costs.
Futran implemented a comprehensive monitoring system using CloudWatch, SNS, and EventBridge to ensure proactive identification of issues, failures, and threshold breaches.
The solution included automated server setup, service upgrades, compliance checks, and remote access based on privileges, utilizing SSM (Fleet Manager, Patch Manager, CloudFormation).
The migration allowed GARP to replicate on-premises Active Directory (AD) in the cloud, maintaining consistent AD functionality.
Windows EC2 servers enabled GARP to use third-party Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) services by acting as a proxy, enhancing security.
GARP members were already well-versed in using Windows systems, eliminating the need for additional training during the migration process.
